Destination Fly Fishing

We Love to Travel to Fish

While we love where we live and feel it is the Cultural Epicenter of Trout in Montana there are plenty of other areas to explore. We passport in hand or just a jaunt across the state we are constantly seeking great fishing opportunities for our friends.

Each year we put together hosted trips to some great destinations.  The  benefits of going on a hosted trip are simple.  First you know that each destination is vetted and approved.  Second, a member of our team will accompany the group on the trip to make sure it runs smoothly. From navigating customs to figuring out which leader to fish in a new destination we will be by your side each step of the way.  On each of these trips you will pay no more than booking solo but get these great benefits along with the comradery of a group of like minded folks.

Belize and El Pescador Lodge  Trip May 25-31 2020

$4420 per person  Fish the Tarpon Migration

We have done this trip for four years in a row and every year it gets better and more popular.  We stay and fish with the award winning El Pescador Lodge in San Pedro Belize.  Two time winner of the Orvis International Lodge of the Year Award.  The lodging and accomodations are second to none.  Three pools on property, spa, bikes, kayaks, swimming, snorkling, diving and world class food ensure there is something for every member of your family.   Our trips are seven days with six days on property.    Five of the six days are reserved for fishing with one of El Pescador great guides.  The remaining day is a free day to explore San Pedro, go on a Mayan Ruin tour, or just relax around the pool.

The gracious, mahogany colonial lodge is right on the beach, facing the sea, surrounded by fragrant tropical flowering plants and the whisper of shady palms.
Each of the fourteen main lodge guest rooms lookout to the sea and are just steps away from our swimming pool adjacent to the beach. All rooms have private baths, overhead fans and air-conditioning.
Not only will you find the serenity and relaxation you are looking for, you'll have the convenience of being a few miles north of San Pedro Town and its gift shops, restaurants, bars and night spots. Guests usually travel by golf cart which can be easily rented at our front desk.

The menu is inspired by the changing seasons and always features a diverse selection of dishes made with delicious, locally sourced ingredients. We strive to provide a menu that meets a wide variety of dietary needs including vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free options.

All gear is provided by either El Pescador, The Tackle Shop or Orvis. We usually have a quiver of rods, reels and line that Orvis sends.  If your Looking to bring your own.

Fly rods in the 7-8 wt. range are the ideal size for Belize bonefish. The lighter rods (7 wt) are great when there is little or no wind and an 8-weight rod has more than enough muscle to deliver a fly in even the stiffest of gales. Moreover, the 8-weight rod will double as the ideal rod for permit and light tarpon fishing. Many anglers prefer to have the larger rod, 8-10 wt. rigged up and in the boat for the permit and a 7 weight rod with a floating line in hand for the bonefish that are routine. This also leaves a heavier rod as a reserve for extremely windy days. Ten to twelve weight rods are perfect for Central American tarpon fishing.
The choice of rod length is important. Nine or nine-and-a-half foot long rods are optimum. More line can be picked up off the water with the longer rods, with less surface disturbance. Also, for the vast majority of fly anglers, greater distances can be covered with less effort using the longer fly rods.

Should be anodized, corrosion-resistant saltwater models that will hold a full fly line, plus approximately 200 yards of 20 lb. backing for bonefish and permit, and 250 yards of 30-50 pound backing for tarpon. Reels equipped with high quality, smooth, drags are essential to prevent break-offs from the blistering runs of a hooked fish.

A weight forward tropical saltwater taper floating line is ideal for most of the sight fishing you will encounter. There may be a few times when an intermediate sinking line is the answer for tarpon and permit fishing. Anglers should also bring along some sort of line cleaner for the lines as well, since saltwater has a way of making them sticky after a few days use.
9 foot straight piece of 40, 60 or 80 lb. Fluorocarbon Tippet Material.
Tapered Leaders 9-12 feet long, ending in 10 or 12 pound.
Tapered Leaders 9-14 feet long ending in 16 to 20 pound

Smith River

Smith River

The Smith River Canyon float in the Lewis and Clark National Forest is a 58 mile stretch of the most pristine trout stream you'll ever see! This truly is what is meant by the expression "God's Country". Abundant wildlife, a blue ribbon trout stream, spectacular scenery and western hospitality combine to make this float the trip of a lifetime. Some are blessed with the opportunity to do it year after year, but everyone should do it at least once.

Limited access restricts this to a 5 day float. Your camp is moved daily by raft as you proceed down the river through limestone canyons, meadows and forested hills. Frequent waterfowl viewings of elk, deer, river otters, raccoons, beaver, and black bears add to the beauty of the Smith River. The Smith River fishes well beginning in May and continues into July. This is a very special place to fly fish and a great trip. All of our Smith River Trips are run with our good friend Todd France and Blast and Cast Outfitters, a long time Smith River Outfitter.
